GICON showcases its experience in the offshore sector

German participation in knowledge transfer for the “Transatlantic Climate Bridge Event“ in Portland, Maine USA

The worldwide potential for the development of deep water offshore wind energy farms has been estimated at over 3,000 gigawatts.  This could represent an earnings potential of hundreds of billions of Euros or US Dollars.   How this potential can be tapped and experience which has already been gained in Germany were the central themes of the “Transatlantic Climate Bridge Event”, a conference organized by the Maine International trade Center (MITC) and KeyBank and held at the beginning of November at the Maine Historical Society in Portland, Maine, USA.

Claudia Schütt, Deputy General Consul for Germany for the New England States in Boston, explained the core of the transatlantic climate bridge.  Founded by the German Foreign Office, innovation and business opportunities are being introduced in order to promote investment in environmental protection and to advance international cooperation.

From the German side, GICON and Wagner/PLARAD, a machine works, presented their experiences and abilities in the area of offshore wind power.

For GICON, Prof. Jochen Großmann and Wayne Brown presented the extensive experience of the GICON Group in the area of permit planning, incl. the ecological investigations for offshore wind power farms.  Considerable interest was paid to the remarks of GICON regarding a new offshore wind platform for deep water, a so-called floating offshore foundation (FOF).

During the course of the GICON visit to America, discussions were already held with several firms on the possibility of a German-American collaboration.  These meetings were organized expertly and with a great degree of diligence by Annette Bossler, the managing director of the “Invest in Maine” initiative, and provided a stimulus for additional discussions in the near future.

Additional information on the event can be obtained from the website of the German Embassy via the following link: www.germany.info/Vertretung/usa/en/__pr/GKs/BOST/2010/11/03__TCB__PR,archiveCtx=1996506.html
