GICON facilitates secondary school participation at the European finals of the Lego Technology Competition
Support for the young inventors
Under the motto “Smart Move”, young inventors gathered to compete against each other at the FIRST LEGO Central European Technology Competition. The goal is to inspire students from 10 to 16 years old about science and technology - a goal that GICON also supports.
Therefore, GICON sponsored the team from the Marie Curie Gymnasium (secondary school) in Dresden in the form of financial support for the trip to Istanbul for the international finals at the beginning of June.
At the annual competition, groups of students design and build their own robot, which must be able to tackle tricky missions on a challenging course within a limited time. This year, the students had to observe, analyze, and optimize transport problems from their own area of life in preparation for the competition.
For the young inventors from Dresden, the participation at the European finals was a great recognition of their work accomplished. From among 56 teams representing 26 countries, the MCGBots team from Marie Curie Gymnasium took home an outstanding second place in the category “Robot Performance”. In this category, the robot built and programmed by the team had to complete various tasks on a playing surface within 2 ½ minutes, for which points were awarded. These included: safe navigation around obstacles and avoidance of collisions, the collection of objects and their transport back to home base, and the reaching of the target area. The international competition was preceded by the qualification at the German regional competition at the end of last year.
