GICON presenting at RENEW 2020
The German pioneer for floating substructures is presenting three papers on their floating offshore developments at the 4th Annual International Conference for Renewable Offshore Energy (RENEW 2020) in Lisbon - October 12 - 15, 2020.
Together with an O&G company GICON® will present the "Concept of a scalable hybrid microgrid for offshore oil and gas platforms using floating wind turbines" at RENEW 2020 (Figure 1 – presenting the project idea). Beside this paper GICON® will present two more papers. One with the title “Universal gravity anchor solution for floating substructures – experimental studies in a wave flume”. The R&D work for this topic is based on the German Floating Wind Cluster OWSplus funded by the BMWi (FK: 03WKDC3B). The third paper on stage is also based on the OWSplus results and has the title “Development of a universal useable and in series production manufacturable buoyancy body design for TLP and semi-submersible” (Figure 2 – the universal useable buoyancy body).
GICON® has been researching floating substructures for more than 10 years and the development is going forward. E.g. since September 2020 a new R&D project by name NuLIMAS (FK: 03SX524B) is ongoing with the focus on liquefaction of soil around the GICON gravity anchor.
With the SOF, GICON® has developed a floating substructure for offshore wind turbines that can be used in water depths of 50 to 350 meters and more and enables levelized costs of electricity of 5 to 8 EUR ct/kWh. This makes GICON® one of the world's leading developers of floating offshore substructures and gravity anchors for wind turbines. Since 2009, GICON® has been developing the SOF, cooperating with renowned partners in industry and research.
The advantages of the GICON® SOF are its stability, its cost-efficient installation on site in the open sea and its modular design. A further advantage: by dispensing with pile driving in the seabed, the TLP also sets an example in terms of environmental protection and sustainability.
Thanks to continuous development based on results of research & development, such as various wind & wave tank tests, the GICON® SOF is ready to prove its performance as a multi-megawatt prototype.
